HEMPEL's strength in paint technology includes:

1: Shopprimers - Freshly blasted/cleaned steel surfaces require protection against corrosion during the period of storage, fabrication and construction. For this specific purpose HEMPEL has developed a competitive high performance range of both solvent and water-borne shopprimer products.

2: Container coatings - Transport containers require protection against aggressive environments as well as numerous types of cargo. HEMPEL has developed coatings with lower VOC (Volatile Organic Content), carbon tetrachloride-free chlorinated rubber paints and water-borne systems. All of these are able to meet the exact and stringent demands of customers and legislative bodies as well as health and safety regulations.

3: Pipeline coatings - Pipes need to be protected both in and outside. On the inside, from the material the pipe is carrying and on the outside from the environment.

4: Ballast tank coatings - With the development of "user friendly" light coloured ballast tank coatings, HEMPEL is now able to offer easy application and inspection coatings for long-term protection. HEMPEL has achieved the highest recommendation by obtaining the Marine Materials Approval Certificates.

5: Antifouling coatings - Ship owners require protection of their vessel both above and below the water-line. HEMPEL has, over many years, developed efficient antifouling coatings which are able to protect surfaces from growth of marine organisms for up to 5 years. With the future of the environment in mind, HEMPEL has developed biocide-free systems and "non-stick" fouling release coatings.

DECKS

Horizontal surfaces are exposed to the sun's damaging ultraviolet rays. These areas also receive high levels of moisture from the rain and snow and this moisture can sit on the surface for days or even weeks. Decks that are built low to the ground (less than two (2) feet) or are skirted cannot be well ventilated therefore, the moisture cannot escape below the

deck. This means the boards are constantly subjected to moisture not only from above but also below.
Decks are subject to physical damage from foot traffic and scraping garden furniture. Physical damage to the coating accelerates the damage caused by the elements.

Due to these factors, we say that a deck is a unique situation. For a coating to properly perform under this variety of harsh conditions, there is little room for haphazard preparation, application or maintenance. Since the horizontal surfaces of a deck are subjected to ultraviolet rays, standing water and excessive moisture, any film building coating can experience some degree of peeling because these elements can literally push the coating off the wood surface. Therefore, it is essential to properly prepare the surface as described in the exterior wood preparation procedures section before coating.

CARPETS

You can install marine carpet on docks, gangways, and in other marine facilities, in addition to installing it on the decks of boats. This carpeting has a flexible backing which allows installers to ensure that it conforms to the surface it is being installed on so that it will not slip or bunch. Marine carpet is made from products which resist ultraviolet radiation so that the carpet will not fade or become damaged through regular sun exposure, and marine carpet also resists mold and mildew so that it can withstand wet environments like docks.
Marine environments are often slippery, making traction an important concern for designers of marine carpet. This type of carpeting is designed to be easy to walk on even when it is wet, so that people can walk around safely without the risk of falling. Marine carpet is also easy to clean; since it is designed to withstand wet environments, it can easily be sprayed down when it becomes dirty.
Boat carpeting can be installed in a variety of outdoor areas, not just in marine environments. The toughness and durability of this carpeting product make it popular in outdoor settings where people want carpeting, or in environments which tend to get wet and messy.
